Do You Have What It Takes to Be a Senior’s Companion?

Senior care is one of the toughest yet most fulfilling jobs that a person can get. Although companionship and homemaking in Bonita Springs, Florida don’t require one to pass an extremely stringent board exam just like with other profession, you are expected to still have a certain level of qualifications to be able to stay in this job.

Before you aim to become a senior’s companion though, you first have to evaluate yourself: do you have what it takes to be one? There are certain factors that will personally qualify you as a senior companion. Here are some of the requirements that you must meet to work in a home care in Florida.

  • Recent Experience

Do you have previous experience working as the primary caregiver in charge of household management? Ideally, it will be good for you to have at least one year of experience. It should be as recent as possible to ensure that your experience is still fresh in your mind. If you haven’t reached the one-year mark though, it is okay to have only at least six months of experience as long as you have worked directly with seniors.

  • Education and Skills

The most basic qualification for caregivers is that they should be able to read, write, and communicate in the same language as a senior. Being able to speak English is highly advantageous. As for the skills that one should hold, personal references (at least three professional references), a high school diploma or GED equivalent, and other documentation can help verify one’s trustworthiness.

Since you will also be required to run errands as a homemaker, it is imperative that you have a valid license. A clean DMV record and reliable insurance policy are required as well.

  • Vice-Free Lifestyle

You can’t expect to take care of other people, especially seniors if you are under the influence of harmful substances. Using illegal drugs while caring for another will make you prone to making mistakes. The same goes when you are intoxicated with alcohol. You should be free of these harmful vices before you care for a senior.

If you have most of these factors or if you feel that you can nurture these qualities, then becoming a senior’s companion may not be difficult for you. You’ll surely be able to find the satisfaction you are looking for in a job as soon as you become a senior companion. If you feel that providing seniors companionship is your calling, L’Elite Homemaker & Companion Services, Inc. can welcome you to our family.
